Leccese stone is a stone classifiable as millenarian (16 millions of years) limestone, prevalently formed by remains of sea fossil organism and it can be found in the salentine subsoil. It is a tender and compact stone, so, for the centuries, local stone-cutter have used especially from 1500 up to 1700, when they have characterized and developed “Leccese Baroque”. This has been more than a style, it has been a phenomenon conditioning not only architecture, but decorative sculpture, urban furniture, minor arts and the look of city such as Lecce and all the cities in the Land of Otranto, too. Protagonists and purchasers of this architectonic cultural evolution was Pappacoda bishop, who ended the cathedral works and the contiguous square, the religious orders of Celestines, Jesuits, Theatines, Alcantarines, Dominicans and Franciscans, and all the rich families who invested much money to embellish their buildings. Our skilled workers handed down this art since five centuries and now our “South shop” puts it at your disposal.
